Put the batteries in the collar and in the transmitter. Make sure both function before you put them on your dog. Also make sure that the system is turned off and set to the lowest setting before attaching it to a dog. This will assure that you don’t shock the dog on accident.
With time, dogs have become an important part of human households, where they are seldom treated as working mates. Unlike people of the 18th century, dog owners of today consider their pets as one of their family members and go out of their way to provide the latter with the best of training, diet, grooming and care.
A few short training repetitions can easily be snuck in before meals, at potty breaks, and other times throughout the day. It is easier for busy people to find a few minutes throughout the day to intentionally train than to find a big block of time daily.
In the canine justice system, the dogs are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the dog trainers, who investigate the unwanted behaviors; and the dog owners, who uphold the training taught to them. These are their stories.
There are many ways to discipline your dog. Be careful when using them that you are disciplining your dog while they are doing the bad behavior and not after they’ve quit. For example, if your dog is barking in the back yard and every time you come to the door, he stops barking and you yell at him, he may not get that you are yelling at him for barking earlier. If you yell at him every time he barks at someone, he might associate your barking with other people showing up and assume the other people are bad. You don’t yell at him when they aren’t around, right?
There are many dog training techniques you can use yourself or, you may want to consider enrolling you and your dog in training classes. Your efforts will result in a calmer and safer household, and a healthier and happier dog.
Most of the better instructors will have some type of credential to show that they actually know how to properly train dogs. There are a number of credentials available for dog trainers from the National Association of Dog Obedience, Association of Pet Dog Trainers, National K-9 Dog Trainers Association, and the International Association of Canine Professionals. Look for an instructor who has a credential from an association that requires rigorous training and education.
Our 6 year old Boxer/Terrier mix, Kali, was being aggressive towards other dogs and even people at times. Lots of barking, growling and we were unable to calm her down once she got too excited or overstimulated. We were unable to even take her on walks due to her want to go after other dogs every time we saw one. She would pull on the leash, whine, bark, growl and was very hard to control even with a choke collar, or harness.
Learned irrelevance is where dogs that are overexposed to a stimulus or cue learn the cue is irrelevant because the exposure has proven to be uneventful. So a dog owner who continually says “Sit, sit” without response or consequence, inadvertently teaches the dog to ignore the cue.
When your dog begins to exhibit a problem behavior, try to work on correcting it right away. The longer you let it go on, the harder it will be to correct it. Some problem behaviors get to the point where they are almost impossible for the average owner to handle. If you think your dog may need the kind of help that you can’t give him, don’t hesitate to seek the help of a professional trainer.
