One of the best things about the clicker is the accuracy. “It’s like taking a photo of the exact behavior you’re rewarding,” Walker explains. The dog associates his action with the click and, subsequently, the reward. Not only does he better understand what he is doing, this also makes him more likely to repeat the action when asked in the future.
A dog learns from interactions it has with its environment. This can be through classical conditioning, where it forms an association between two stimuli; non-associative learning, where its behavior is modified through habituation or sensitisation; and operant conditioning, where it forms an association between an antecedent and its consequence.
We all love our dogs. They are always there with a happy greeting, a wet nose to wake up to, a warm spot to snuggle up to. Your dog is your best friend, and you probably can’t think of how you could possibly love him anymore. This February, a month dedicated to all…
Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors — existing ones or those that may develop in the future.

William Koehler was perhaps the first dog trainer who had encouraged dog owners to have a better bonding with their dogs. In fact, before that, dogs were considered as working animals, and were mostly kept in the backyard. His methods helped dog owners transform these animals into household pets. It is he who introduced the leashes and collars and explained their importance.

Keep your puppy with you at all times during toilet training. If you can’t watch closely and attentively, consider crate training or using a playpen, the laundry or the bathroom as a safe den. More on this to follow.
Offer frequent potty opportunities. Give your pup plenty of opportunities to take care of business outside. Go outside first thing in the morning, and then every 30 to 60 minutes throughout the day. And also take your puppy outside after it wakes from a nap or finishes a meal.
I highly recommend your organization for behavior training, boarding, and all the other services that you offer. I am a dog and cat lover and can guarantee you that the first stop I make when I get another dog will be “I Said Sit!”. I will not bring another dog to my home until you have spent 30 days with the animal working your magic. Thank you for saving my dog and my sanity.

Operant conditioning is a scientific term that describes the way animals learn from the consequences of certain behaviors. Positive reinforcement is a type of operant conditioning often used in dog training.
Daily Dog Training programs are our most popular training programs. There are two of all dog training programs, the dog needs regular practice so the new lessons become habit and the owner and family need to know what to do so that the training transfers. Your dog gets training daily and we include a private lesson with the family each week your dog is in one of the Day Dog Training programs.
In 2011, animal trainers averaged $30,510 a year. Because certain industries – namely motion pictures – pay higher salaries for their trainers, median wage is often used to predict earning potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of all trainers earned $25,980 a year or less. Both figures, however, fail to differentiate one type of trainer from the next. A dog trainer is paid a much different scale than a horse trainer, for example.
A few short training repetitions can easily be snuck in before meals, at potty breaks, and other times throughout the day. It is easier for busy people to find a few minutes throughout the day to intentionally train than to find a big block of time daily.
Take baby steps Dogs, just like people, learn best when new tasks are broken down into small steps. For example, you can’t go out and line dance unless you learn all of the individual steps first! When teaching your dog a new skill, begin with an easy first step and increase difficulty gradually. If you’re training your dog to stay, start by asking her to stay for just 3 seconds. After some practice, try increasing the duration of her stay to 8 seconds. When your dog has mastered an 8-second stay, make things a little harder by increasing the time to 15 seconds. Over the next week or two, continue to gradually increase the duration of the stay from 15 seconds to 30 seconds to a minute to a few minutes, etc. By training systematically and increasing difficulty slowly, you’ll help your dog learn faster in the long run.
Coming when called is one of the most important skills for your dog to have on lock, because it can keep her safe in potentially dangerous situations. Best Friends Animal Society suggests that you “make it a party” every time your dog comes when calls. No matter what they’re leaving behind, coming to you should be the best thing that happens to them all day!

During your dog’s life you may decide to teach it to perform all manner of impressive tricks and tasks. Those are optional. But the following types of training should be considered as absolutely essential for every dog owner.
Your dog will be happy because it wants to please you, and because it wants to reap the rewards of good behaviour. You will be happier because your dog will be more manageable and will enrich your life.
Punishment is operationally defined as an event that lowers the probability of the behavior that it follows. It is not “punishment” in the common sense of the word, and does not mean physical or psychological harm and most certainly does not mean abuse. Punishment simply involves the presentation of an undesired consequence (positive punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as a snap of the leash, or the removal of a desired consequence (negative punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as the trainer eating the cheese that would have been the reward. A behavior that has previously been developed may cease if reinforcement stops; this is called extinction. A dog that paws its owner for attention will eventually stop if it no longer receives attention.
The fall can mean back to school for kids as well as dogs. Obedience courses are great for young dogs that need to learn basic commands, manners, and socialization skills. Typically, obedience courses will teach them things like how to sit and lie down, they will learn how to interact with other dogs and people, and they will become better behaved in general.

Meet Latasha and Charlie Batch’s 2-year old Rottweiler. Indya is a very sweet dog, but she was displaying some aggression towards other dogs/people and she couldn’t go on walks without being distracted. We had her for a 3-week Board & Train and she no longer shows aggression and walks in a perfect heel without being distracted.
Today there is no place for harsh punishments and losing temper. Fortunately, for the last few decades, canine psychology and behavior is being given more importance and based on such aspects, dog training is now about loads of patience and positive reinforcements. A lot of puppy and dog training classes teach the heel command only in the advanced classes. The heel command should actually be one of the first things you teach your puppy or dog. They need to learn how to follow. Once you establish this all other aspects of training will be easier and their behavior in general will be better as the dog will learn to respect you as the leader.

You don’t need to sign up for an obedience class to get help training your puppy. I’ve taught hundreds of those classes and they can be overwhelming for a puppy. Timid puppies can get overrun by bullies, and excitable puppies just get more excitable.
