Recreate the triggering event. Once you’ve figured out what makes your dog bark, perform that action in front of your dog. The idea is to encourage him to bark on his own, then praise him for the action.

Before you start, it’s a good idea to review the basics of dog training: be patient, be positive, mind your body language, work in bursts (10-15 minute training sessions at a time), and add variety to help your dog respond reliably in any situation.

Dog obedience training is the best solution to this type of excessive barking. Once you have your dog properly obedience trained, you will be able to communicate to him that this is unacceptable behavior. To learn how to train your dog at home with the latest cutting edge techniques click here.

Introduce a cue word. To encourage toileting on command it doesn’t take much extra work to introduce a word while your dog is urinating or defecating. So when your dog starts toileting say ‘wee wee’ or whistle (or introduce a hand signal) so that the behavior is paired with a command. This means on those cold wintery nights, or during toilet breaks on long road trips you have a way to quickly get your dog to urinate/defecate on command.

Mention training methods to a group of dog trainers, and you might want to prepare for a fight at the dog park. Some call those who use only positive reinforcement “cookie pushers” or “treat slingers.” The other side calls those who use more dominance-based techniques “choke folks” or worse – cruel and inhumane.

Every time you walk through the neighborhood park, you notice well-trained dogs playing fetch or sitting next to their owners with calm attention and under complete control. Then you look down at your puppy and wonder why they still keep chewing up your shoes. Training a puppy is hard work, but the professional dog trainers at K-9 University have the knowledge and experience to work with your dog’s specific needs to ensure optimal results. K-9 University stives to be the best dog training provider around and wants to make sure your puppies fully understand what people expect of them.

Maida says positive reinforcement is often misused. “The dog gets praised for merely existing or rewarded when it demands it. When the dog barks at the mailman, people say ‘Good dog. Calm down. It’s OK.’ And it loses value.”

“DO NOT THINK THE PROGRAM WILL BE THE SILVER BULLET AND DO THE WORK FOR YOU. No effective dog training program will ever cite itself in that way. 80% of the work will need to be done by you, and rightly so: the CTC will lay the foundation for your dog to be trained. YOU must continue the work.”  (See Full Review on Google+)

The first step is to socialize your dog with your family. This is best done slowly and patience is a virtue here. Dogs and humans speak a different language so you’ll both be learning how to communicate.

Applying some proper obedience training at an early stage (the earlier the better!) is a most effective technique to correct any behavior problems, and also to prevent any future problems. The fact that you are reading this page possibly means it is too late for this tip!

Teach your dog basic command skills. A service dog has to be able to sit, stay, lie down, and come on cue. The dog also needs to walk next to the handler in a controlled manner all the time. This is so that you have control over your dog at all times.

The 21st century has seen the proliferation of television programs and accompanying books that feature dog training and rehabilitation,[35] including Joel Silverman’s Good Dog U, Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, It’s Me or the Dog featuring Victoria Stillwell, The Underdog Show, Dogs in the City, and SuperFetch. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers advises that television programs are produced primarily for entertainment, and while all programs will have good and not-so-good the viewer should critically evaluate the information before deciding which training tips to adopt.[36]

The BEST dog training! We were so happy with the improvements we have seen with our puppy in such a short time. The training here is awesome, they truly care about the dogs and setting them up for success.

This is an exercise in self-control for your dog, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a while to master, particularly for puppies and high-energy dogs. After all, they want to be on the move and not just sitting there waiting.

We absolutely LOVE Dog Training Now! They are kind, professional, and a wonderful resource and training facility. Our dog has received so many compliments on his training and listening since attending the 10 day training program. He recently brushed up his skills at a three day intensive and was so excited to be back with the trainers. I look forward to being able to sign him up for another course!

After taking my German shepherd to numerous places and trying out 2 different training schools, I came across DOG TRAINING NOW. I did a lot of home work reading reviews and even swinging by   and meeting the staff. I wrote the owner Judy and explained my concerns of only wanting the best for my dear German Shepherd  Missy.  Judy replied back to me and I can tell by her response that their was a lot of diligence.  The staff at dog training now rocks and goes above and beyond. Marcus, Chris and Mat excelled at teaching Missy to heel…. read more

For a new puppy, a crate helps with housebreaking and provides a safe den for sleeping. When your puppy is used to his crate, it will be easy to take him visiting, or for trips in the car, or to the vet. When we watch TV, we sit in our favorite chairs and our dog Buffy chooses to lie down in her crate, watching the same shows we watch (well, sort of!).

When the dog performs a desired behavior, make the click sound, then give him a treat. Once he’s performing that behavior consistently, you can give the behavior a command name. Begin tying the command and the behavior together with the help of the clicker.

Let’s face it, Training Classes are an investment of both time and money; however, the return on that investment can be life changing for you and your companion. Learning to train your pet is fun and doesn’t require any specialized experience. Your pet will benefit from clear leadership, exercise, training and play. The result will be a well-mannered family member that is happy and a joy to live with.

Begin doorway “wait”-training early. Teaching a dog to respect the threshold is important. You do not want a dog that runs out the door every time it opens — that could be dangerous for him. Doorway training doesn’t need to happen every single time you go through a doorway. But you should make the most of your training opportunities early in your puppy’s life.

Some people believe that the only way to transform a disobedient dog into a well-behaved one is to dominate her and show her who’s boss. However, the “alpha dog” concept in dog training is based more on myth than on animal science. More importantly, it leads misguided pet parents to use training techniques that aren’t safe, like the “alpha roll.” Dogs who are forcibly rolled onto their backs and held down can become frightened and confused, and they’re sometimes driven to bite in self defense.

In extreme cases of excessive barking, where all else has failed, some people advocate debarking surgery. I’ve never needed to go down this path with any of my dogs, and don’t think I ever would. But if you have come to the end of the line and think you have run out of options, you could discuss debarking surgery with your Veterinarian. Hopefully your Vet will come up with some other options before taking this drastic step.

Unwanted dog behavior can be more than annoying. Many of the 8 million pets taken in by U.S. shelters each year are abandoned because of behavior issues, and many end up euthanized, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Prepare for the training session. Grab his favorite toy or prepare a handful of treats to both focus your dog’s attention and reward him for learning the command. Put the dog in a starting “down” or “lie down” position when working with the “stand” command. He should move from lying down to standing up to get his toy or treats.
