“My experience with Premier was absolutely amazing. My pup had developed pretty severe dog reactivity over the years. She could not get along with other dogs at all. After researching I found Premier. It was a very fairly priced board and train that came with lifetime follow-up training whenever your dog boards there. To me, that spoke volumes. They were not simply there to collect a check but rather to ensure that your dog receives quality training. Through working with Premier, she has made unbelievable progress. She is tighter with commands and can now interact with other dogs in a happier manner. From greeting to playing, she has grown so much. Upon picking her up, they showed me what she had learned and then taught me what I need to do on my end. They were knowledgeable and thorough, and their passion for what they do was evident.
Well… Before your course, my puppy was a 4 month old Cairn Terrier, who I couldn’t get to come for anything except dinner. But now she’ll sit and wait patiently. And now she’ll come whenever I call, whether their is food or not! If a disabled guy like me can make this stuff work, I don’t see why every dog owner wouldn’t want to learn your methods. *
She is available for workshops and seminars throughout New England and uses a 70+-page training and management manual “How To Create A Happy, Eager, & Fun Relationship With Your Dog”, or “Changing Fear to Joy” which are used in her classes and private consultations. These resources are available for sale.
Assess whether the dog is intelligent and eager to please. These are the hallmarks of a trainable dog and will make the task of training easier and more enjoyable. Look for a young dog that approaches you calmly but without fear. His or her body language should indicate confidence, such as an erect tail, wagging, walking directly to you (not slinking around the edges of the room), and keeping its head up (not lowered and cowed).

Puppies are naturally hard-wired to follow a pack leader. A pack leader is, by definition, strong, stable, and consistent; traits many new puppy owners forget. Many of my clients are strong leaders in their jobs, but when they come home, they turn to mush with their dogs. Then they come to me puzzled as to why their dog won’t behave.
12. Provide the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Bored dogs get into trouble. For young puppies, mental stimulation is just as tiring as physical exercise and is safer for their growing bodies.

Hand feed your dog. At meal time, start feeding your dog out of your hand. Then use your hands to put the rest of the food in the bowl. This will put your scent on your dog’s bowl and also normalize having your hands around their bowl and food. This should help fix or prevent any food aggression tendencies.

Every dog needs to learn to walk on a leash. Besides the fact that most areas have leash laws, there will be times when keeping your dog on a leash is for his own safety. Learn how to introduce your dog or puppy to the leash, then teach him how to walk properly on the leash. A loose leash walk teaches your dog not to pull or lunge when on the leash, making the experience more enjoyable for both you and your dog. Here’s what you need to know:

Derived from the theories of symbolic interactionism, relationship based training exploits the patterns of communication, interpretation and adjustment between dogs and their trainers. Building on a positive relationship between them, the method sets out to achieve results that benefit both the dog and the trainer, while at the same time enhancing and strengthening their relationship. The basic principles include ensuring that the dog’s basic needs have been met before beginning a training session, finding out what motivates the dog and using it to elicit behaviours, interpreting the dog’s body language to improve communication between dog and trainer, using positive reinforcement to encourage desired behavior, training incompatible behaviors to replace unwanted behaviours, and controlling the dog’s environment to limit the possibility of unwanted behaviours. A relationship-based approach to dog training is not reliant on using particular training aids or treats, the relationship is always there, and the connection between dog and trainer is sufficiently powerful to achieve the training goals.
Sylvia-Stasiewicz, who wrote The Love That Dog Training Method, says a client’s Australian shepherd wouldn’t stop jumping, despite reprimands. A trainer who used a more traditional, alpha dog technique taught the client to knee the dog in the chest each time it jumped.

We are often asked when should we start training our puppy? The answer is easy – the moment you get your puppy. These early days, weeks and months are formative times and by getting it right now, the years that follow become ones to enjoy. Many times clients request a consultation before the puppy arrives. By preparing and ensuring everything is in place and the whole family are on the same page with commands and routines, a strong foundation can be built for a wonderful future together in your family.
For example, before you ever teach your dog the “sit” command, give the sound, a treat, and praise when you find him sitting. When he begins sitting just to get the treats, start saying the word “sit” to get him into position. Pair it with the click sound to reward him. Eventually, he will learn that sitting in response to the “sit” command will earn him a click reward.
There are a lot of places that advertise dog obedience courses, but the place to start is with the people you know. This means asking for referrals from other dog lovers in your area, veterinarians, family members, or anyone else in your network. In addition to that, you can also look in your phone book or search for classes in your area online.
Enroll in a local dog obedience training class to learn the basics. Then most teaching and training can and should be done in your home. It is best to begin training in an area that is familiar to your dog and with the least amount of distractions as possible. When you feel both you and your dog are skilled at several obedience commands, then take these commands to different areas. Introducing distractions may seem like starting all over again, but it’s worth the effort. In reality, who cares if your dog will sit stay when no one is around? What you need is a dog who will sit-stay when company is at the door. Who cares if your dog heels beautifully in your own back yard? But you need to start there if you eventually want a dog who will heel beautifully when walking down Union Street.
Walk your German shepherd dog on a leash around the perimeter of your property regularly to identify your territorial boundaries. Do not allow your dog to bark at people who are outside your property. Do not allow your dog to chase people under any circumstances.
But if your training method consists of giving your puppy a treat to coax him to do what you say, then you’re going to find yourself in trouble when you want him to do something and he’s not hungry…. or when you want him to STOP doing something and he’s having too much fun to stop, regardless of the treats you’re desperately flinging at him.
There’s an exciting shift going on in the world of dog training… and the dogs love it. We are training dogs effectively with pain-free methods. What do you want your dog or puppy to do? Sit, stay, come, be housetrained, accept a crate, walk on a loose leash, what else? Would you like to train your dog to do these things and more by using methods that are fun for human and dog and that involve no pain?

Everything you can do with a German Shepherd you can do with little dogs. The point of this website is you don’t need a German Shepherd or large breed to have a well-trained companion animal.

PAWS Training Centers believes that legitimate service dog organizations’ primary mission is to help people with disabilities, while collectively promoting what is best for clients, dogs, and the service dog industry. Communication, interaction and strong relationships with like-minded service dog organizations results in a mutual benefit to everyone. Assistance Dogs International provides a comprehensive listing of service dog organizations that they recognize as having exemplary standards. If you are seeking a certification from an organization that is recognized by ADI, we recommend contacting your desired organization to determine their process and whether or not they certify privately-owned dogs. Each ADI recognized organization will have different requirements, procedures, and costs for privately owned dogs to pursue certification. Eligibility for certification with any organization is separate from your training with PAWS Training Centers, so you will need to contact your preferred organization directly. We have many clients that have passed our PAWS Training Centers’ Service Dog Training Program that have successfully pursued and graduated with an ADI-recognized certification!
