At The Fundamental Dog, you’ll discover how much fun training can be – for both ends of leash! Even troubling behavior issues can be addressed with positive dog training.  Whether you’re looking for dog obedience training, puppy classes, or behavior modification for your dog, we’re here to help.

Figure out what your dog values most and make him work for them. For example, if your dog likes to play ball, make him sit before you throw the ball. Also, meal time is a good time to train. Feed the dog piece by piece as you teach something.

Researchers have described several reasons why the dominance model is a poor choice for dog training.[71] First, a relationship based on dominance is established to gain priority access to scarce resources, not to impose particular behaviors on the less dominant animal,[72] so the dominance model is irrelevant for most of the behaviors that people want from their dogs, such as coming when called or walking calmly on a leash.[71] Second dominance-submission relationships, once established, are constantly tested and must be regularly reinforced.[73] Thus people, particularly children and the elderly, may not be able to retain their rank and are at risk of being injured if they attempt to do so.[71] Third, dominant individuals gain priority access to resources, but only while they are present, establishing dominance over a dog does not guarantee its behavior when the dominant individual is distant or absent.[71]

Almost 70% of dog owners will euthanize or re-home a dog even after hiring a professional trainer. 99% of “dog training” does not work in real life. I am the only service dog trainer Near Me that has 1000’s of photos of trained dogs to show their dog training actually works.

Hold the leash as close to the dog’s collar as you comfortably can. The farther away from the dog’s collar you hold your hand, the less control you have. Apply a little upward tension on the collar — just enough to let him know the tension is there, but not enough to make him uncomfortable.

If you want your dog to be obedient in your car, guess where you have to practice? If you suddenly want your dog to down-stay while you are trying to move over 3 lanes to make an exit, you had better find time to practice those obedience commands in the car long before you need them. Don’t drive and practice at the same time. Practice while the car is parked or while someone else is driving.

If your puppy is older than 12 weeks when you bring him home and he’s been eliminating in a cage (and possibly eating his waste), house training may take longer. You will have to reshape the dog’s behavior — with encouragement and reward.

You don’t need to sign up for an obedience class to get help training your puppy. I’ve taught hundreds of those classes and they can be overwhelming for a puppy. Timid puppies can get overrun by bullies, and excitable puppies just get more excitable.

Dogs are also trained for special purposes such as CGC Certification; for dog sports, including but not limited to competition obedience, dog agility, herding, tracking, and flyball; and to undertake particular roles such as detection dogs, assistance dogs, hunting dogs, police dogs, SAR (search and rescue dogs) or guard dogs.

Typical positive reinforcement events will satisfy some physiological or psychological need, so it can be food, a game, or a demonstration of affection. Different dogs will find different things reinforcing. Negative reinforcement occurs when a dog discovers that a particular response ends the presentation of an aversive stimulus. An aversive is anything that the dog does not like, such as verbal admonishment, or a tightened choke chain.[39]

Children’s or pet playpens or baby gates across a doorway can be used to similar effect. The additional benefit is that in a smaller area, your dog will either learn to ‘hold on’ to avoid toileting in the cosy ‘den’, or will at least select a place away from his bed to toilet. As soon as you let your dog out from the crate or pen take them to the toileting spot and do not keep your dog confined for long periods of time.

Once you’ve assumed your role as pack leader, all you will need is consistency and the natural techniques taught by Bark Busters to reinforce and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Bark Busters dog trainers can show you how to transform a “problem dog” into a happy, obedient lifelong buddy, often in only a matter of hours. Bark Busters is so confident with our dog training methods that we offer Guaranteed Lifetime Support.

Operant conditioning (or instrumental conditioning) is a form of learning in which an individual’s behavior is modified by its consequences. Two complementary motivations drive instrumental learning: the maximization of positive outcomes and minimization of aversive ones.[37] There are two ways in which behavior is reinforced or strengthened: positive reinforcement occurs when a behavior is strengthened by producing some desirable consequence; negative reinforcement occurs when a behavior is strengthened by avoiding some undesirable consequence. There are two ways in which behavior is decreased or weakened: negative punishment occurs when a behavior is weakened by not producing a reinforcing consequence; and positive punishment occurs when a behavior is weakened by producing a consequence that is a disincentive. In combination, these basic reinforcing and punishing contingencies provide four ways for modifying behavior.[38] Reinforcement increases the relative probability or frequency of the behavior it follows, while punishment decreases the relative probability or frequency of the behaviour it follows.

4. Learn about dog body language. Your dog may not be able to talk, but he can tell you how he feels. This is a good place to start learning what he’s saying: http://www.akc.org/content/entertainment/articles/how-to-read-dog-body-language/

Brent is great!  I have a VERY loud beagle who is constantly anxious and has trouble regulating himself.  Brent took my dog for 2 weeks and the tips that he gave me have been helpful in regulating my dogs behavior.  Crate training and leash training are much better than before.  Just remember that if your dog has an issue like noise, Brent will not CURE the issue.  However, he can give you tips on how to deal with it and the source.  The best part is once he trains your dog he will board them when you’re out of town.  So if you have a difficult dog you know it is in good hands!

Dog Training Now has been an awesome place for our family to take our then 3 month old dachshund puppy to puppy preschool and now that he’s 4 months old, to day training. Puppy preschool was a great place for our puppy to socialize with other dogs and people while dealing with new situations to build confidence. Not to mention it was a lot of fun for us too! When our puppy was old enough for day training, he went in to learn leash basics such as heel, sit, stay, etc. The day training is great because you leave your… read more

Discourage pulling. Most dogs will pull on the leash when they’re learning to take walks. When he starts pulling, stop immediately. Don’t take another step until the dog comes to your side and focuses his attention on you.

A few short training repetitions can easily be snuck in before meals, at potty breaks, and other times throughout the day. It is easier for busy people to find a few minutes throughout the day to intentionally train than to find a big block of time daily.

Keep a few clickers and treat bowls scattered around the house to make everyday training easier. Dry treats and a clicker can easily be hidden in a covered dish or in a desk drawer (just be sure that the treats are in a place not readily accessible to your dog) to make training easier.
