It’s hard to forge a deep friendship with your dog when he’s chewing up your furniture, soiling your carpets, jumping uncontrollably, or nipping at your friends and kids! Our proven training methodology puts you in charge so you can move beyond bad behavior and begin to more thoroughly enjoy your relationship with your dog.
DOG TRAINING PHILOSOPHY Superdog clients learn how to work with their dog using love, affection, respect and trust. Our dog training is about building a better relationship between you and your dog. We do not use Food-Bribery or compulsion. Our method is based on a relationship, positive reinforcement and dog psychology.
Proofing Behaviors:…MORE Practice behaviors in a variety of situations with different levels of distraction. Without proofing, your dog may behave well in your living room, but seem to forget all his training when he is outside the house.

Prepare for the training session. Grab his favorite toy or prepare a handful of treats to both focus your dog’s attention and reward him for learning the command. Put the dog in a starting “down” or “lie down” position when working with the “stand” command. He should move from lying down to standing up to get his toy or treats.

“Thank you so much for all you have done for Coco. Your efforts have taken her from an anxious, “hyper” dog, who had a very tough time attracting attention at adoptions events, to a well-behaved girl who walks beautifully on the leash, and greets people politely. You’ve made her so much more adoptable!”
Before giving a word command to your dog, speak its name to get its attention; then speak a one-word command such as “stay,” “sit,” “come” or “heel.” Do not get impatient. You will probably have to repeat the command many times. Never use negative reinforcement. Do not call your dog to come to you for punishment because this will teach your dog not to come on command. Be sure to keep any frustration out of the tone of your voice. If you feel yourself becoming frustrated, take a break. Your dog can sense this and will start to associate training with your unhappiness. You cannot hide your frustration from a dog. You cannot pretend. Dogs can feel human emotion, so stay relaxed, firm and confident.
In addition, teach your dog to take no note of cats, food on the ground, a stranger talking to the dog or vehicles (especially moving vehicles). The one and only thing that the dog is supposed to care about is you.
We utilize humane, science-backed training techniques to provide the most effective instruction for you and your dog using rewards-based training methods to shape desirable behavior. You can feel confident that punitive training techniques will not be found here! To learn more about our guiding principles, check out this position statement from the APDT.
Dog obedience class is a great way to help socialize an adult dog before attempting going into dog parks or having playdates. Because your dog is learning commands, he is distracted most of the time. Speak to your trainer about the issue and she can help you introduce your dog slowly to other dogs in the class. This is also a safe place for your dog to learn to interact with other humans.
…until the next time he’s up all night barking. Oh boy, what are you going to do? You’ve tried everything—but Fido’s immune to just about everything you’ve tried—and it’s starting to look like the end of the road.
Our dog trainers only use reward-based training methods. We believe in rewarding a dog for doing well, rather than having a dog work to avoid a bad outcome. A reward can mean treats, food, praise or even a toy your dog loves. We use clicker training in our obedience classes to let the dog know when they have done the behavior correctly. This helps the dog learn quickly, and then we work to eliminate the clicker and treats. Training this way is fun and rewarding for both the humans and the dogs.
In 1848 W. N. Hutchinson published his book Dog Breaking: The Most Expeditious, Certain and Easy Method, Whether Great Excellence or Only Mediocrity Be Required, With Odds and Ends for Those Who Love the Dog and the Gun. Primarily concerned with training hunting dogs such as pointers and setters, the book advocates a form of reward-based training, commenting on men who have “a strong arm and a hard heart to punish, but no temper and no head to instruct” and suggesting “Be to his virtues ever kind. Be to his faults a little blind.” Stephen Hammond, a writer for Forest and Stream magazine, advocated in his 1882 book Practical Training that hunting dogs be praised and rewarded with meat for doing the correct behavior.
There is some debate among those that use electronic collars about what the collars should be used for. Some argue that the collars should only be used on dogs that have severe behavior problems, for instance to change behavior that could get a dog put down. There are others that use the collars for correcting behavior, such as if a dog gets into a garden bed the owner will turn on the collar to teach the dog that this behavior is bad. There are others still that use the collar to signal a dog to do positive behaviors, such as sitting, staying, or lying down.
It’s sort of like when your teenager comes down the stairs with an enormous pimple on her forehead. You don’t mention it and act as if there’s nothing wrong. By acting as if your dog’s behavior is no big deal, you’re creating a calmer environment and, thus, a calmer dog. So when he streaks under your legs because the postman is at the door, go on about your business as usual.

There’s an exciting shift going on in the world of dog training… and the dogs love it. We are training dogs effectively with pain-free methods. What do you want your dog or puppy to do? Do this in small steps. For fetching keys, this would involve the dog recognizing the keys, picking them up, bringing them to you, and giving the keys. To teach the dog what keys are, place a set on the floor where it can clearly see them. When it goes to investigate, click, cue word ‘keys’, and reward. Every time it approaches the keys repeat the same routine. You will notice the dog becomes more proactive about approaching the keys, and at this point say the cue word ‘Keys’ and as he continues to approach, click.

For a new puppy, a crate helps with housebreaking and provides a safe den for sleeping. When your puppy is used to his crate, it will be easy to take him visiting, or for trips in the car, or to the vet. When we watch TV, we sit in our favorite chairs and our dog Buffy chooses to lie down in her crate, watching the same shows we watch (well, sort of!).
After a lot of research and reading reviews, I made an appointment to meet the staff at Dog Training Now. I went in with my dog, Bear, and was impressed with the facility and the trainer (Matt) I met with. My wife and I decided to put Bear in the 10 day Fabulous Dog day training program. We couldn’t be happier. Every staff member is kind, gentle, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The two trainers I had the most contact with were Dan and Chris, and they were fantastic. When we picked up Bear in… read more
The trick is to get the dog to do the focus command (“look at me”, or its name), and then give the command “sit” reward that command. If the dog jumps on you do not give it a place to land, and reinforce that focus, and sit command. If the dog is overly hyper, probably you should do that, but also add in some structured exercise (fetch or go for a jog or run). See further: How to Stop a Dog from Jumping.
